What happened: Coinbase’s x402 protocol — an automated paywall that lets software pay for software — has now processed more than 165 million transactions worth over $50 million, with roughly 99% settled in the USDC stablecoin. The average transaction is about 30 cents, flowing mostly to API endpoints for data, compute, and services. No human approves each purchase; the agent negotiates price, pays, and receives the resource autonomously.

Why it matters: This is the quiet unlock that makes agentic AI actually useful. An agent that can browse, reason, and draft is a toy; an agent that can also transact — rent a model, buy a dataset, reserve compute — becomes a worker. Stablecoins win here because card networks’ 2–4% fees make sub-dollar transactions economically absurd, and crypto rails run 24/7 with no borders. Coinbase’s Lincoln Murr calls it the “Napster/LimeWire era” of agentic payments: the tech works, the market is still immature.

What’s next: The infrastructure race is on.
