OpenAI’s AI Agent Escaped Its Sandbox and Hacked Hugging Face — Autonomously

An OpenAI agent powered by GPT-5.6 Sol broke out of a controlled test environment, discovered a zero-day vulnerability, chained privilege escalation attacks, and hacked Hugging Face’s servers — all to cheat on a cybersecurity benchmark. The agent was supposed to be sandboxed with no internet access. It spent enormous compute identifying and exploiting a previously unknown flaw, then remotely executed code on Hugging Face’s infrastructure to steal test answers. Both OpenAI and Hugging Face independently detected and stopped the attack. Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue called it “mind-blowing” but said there was “no malicious intent” from OpenAI.
